National park visitors cut down protected Joshua trees during partial government shutdown

National park visitors cut down protected Joshua trees during partial government shutdown By Andrea Diaz, CNN  Updated 4:47 PM EST, Sat January 12, 2019   (CNN) There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who take it upon themselves to go to understaffed national parks to  keep them clean during the government shutdown , and then those who set up illegal campsites and cut down Joshua trees in the national park of the same name. Pictures shared by the National Park Service and the nonprofit news organization  National Parks Traveler  show a downed tree and illegal campsites in California's  Joshua Tree National Park . Washington Post: Trump concealed details from meetings with Putin

Washington Post: Trump concealed details from meetings with Putin Updated 10:28 PM EST, Sat January 12, 2019   Washington (CNN) There are no detailed records of five personal meetings President Donald Trump has had with Russian President Vladimir Putin,  The Washington Post reported Saturday, citing US officials. Trump has gone to what the Post described as "extraordinary lengths" to keep the specifics of his conversations with his Russian counterpart under wraps. Current and former US officials told the paper that Trump's efforts include confiscating the notes from his interpreter and not allowing them to discuss the details of the meetings with other officials in his administration. The Post notes that this behavior by Trump is not usual per past presidential standards. In one instance, following a meeting Trump had with Putin in Hamburg, Germany, in 2017 that former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was also present for, a Whit...

Trump snubs EU with diplomatic downgrade

Trump administration snubs EU with diplomatic downgrade Washington (CNN) Ambassadors lining up to pay their respects at President George H.W. Bush's funeral knew the routine: They would be called in order of seniority, a well-established system in which everyone knew where they belonged. Until they didn't. The European Union's ambassador to the US, David O'Sullivan, normally among the first 30 foreign envoys to be seated, watched as almost every other ambassador to the US took a seat, leaving him among the last to be called. That, according to an EU official, was how the 28-member bloc learned that the Trump administration had downgraded its diplomatic status from a state to an international organization. The shift -- a reversal of an Obama administration decision in 2016 -- has riled Brussels, deepening a growing rift and appalling diplomats in Washington who decried the move as "amateur" and "unprofessional." The l...

Trump says he won’t sign Senate deal to avert shutdown, demands funds for border security

Trump says he won’t sign Senate deal to avert shutdown, demands funds for border security        President Trump threatened Thursday to veto a stopgap spending bill unless it includes billions of dollars to build a wall along the border with Mexico, sending large parts of the federal government lurching toward a shutdown starting Saturday. His comments came after an emergency meeting with House Republican leaders, where Trump revealed he would reject a measure passed in the Senate the night before. That measure would fund many government agencies through Feb. 8, but it would not include any new money for Trump’s border wall. “I’ve made my position very clear. Any measure that funds the government must include border security,” Trump said in an event at the White House. He added, “Walls work, whether we like it or not. They work better than anything.”
