Pic: Marvel Black Panther, the first superhero film with a predominantly black cast, has passed the $1bn (£794m) mark at the worldwide box office. Disney, which is behind the film, based the figure on ticket sale estimates and comes on the 26th day of the film's release. It is also the 33rd film to join the box office billion-dollar club, and the 16th Disney title to do so. China: President Xi has declared the start of a new era

New post China: President Xi has declared the start of a new era  UK,   Sunday   11   March   2018 Image: President Xi Jinping after casting his ballot Inside the Great Hall of the People, the delegates lined up enthusiastically to pose for photographs, but they were less keen to talk about the vote they were about to cast. Successive dark-suited officials waved me away, or affected not to hear my question. For a move we're told reflects the "unanimous" desire of the party and the masses, it proved surprisingly difficult to find anyone prepared to discuss it with me. But then this was never a forum for debate. China's National People's Congress is often described as a parliament, but in practice its function is to approve the proposals the Communist Party sends it, not to challenge them - it has yet to vote down a single one. They went through the motions anyway. The ballot boxes were examined, the papers handed out, the delegates given

Public Health England (PHE) issued "precautionary advice" a week after former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found slumped on a bench in the Wiltshire city. This was in response to traces of a nerve agent being discovered at The Mill pub and the nearby Zizzi restaurant, both of which the pair visited. ::  Litvinenko widow: PM 'did nothing' after my husband's death ::  What is a nerve agent and how does it work? The singer agreed to buy the eight-acre property and its Roman villa-style buildings for $14.5m (£10.4m) in 2015, but the deal failed when its former residents objected. The Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary have owned the property for more than four decades but have not lived there for several years. Sister Holzman was joined by Sister Rita Callanan in trying to scupper the move by selling the property to a restaurant owner for $44,000 (£31,760). Image: Perry has been trying to secure the purch

Theresa May will need a demonstration of European solidarity in standing up to Vladimir Putin

New post Theresa May will need a demonstration of European solidarity in standing up to Vladimir Putin W hen Vladimir Putin was asked recently  what historical event he would change  if he had the power, he said he would undo the collapse of the Soviet Union. This was not a surprising answer, but it was a timely reminder of what motivates Kremlin policy. Putinism embodies the feeling that Russia was robbed of its wealth and superpower status. The internal failings and atrocities of the Soviet system are of little consequence in this account of history. The Russian president’s project is the reversal, at any cost, of a humiliating defeat by the west. The  attempted murder of Sergei Skripal , a former Russian spy who worked for MI6, and the credible suspicion of Kremlin responsibility, must be seen in this context. The use of  a sophisticated nerve agent  points to an assassination attempt by a government actor. Moscow attacks such talk as “an anti-Russian campaign”. But com
