NEW YORK:

HIGHLIGHTS

  1. Several people were reportedly injured after blast in midtown Manhattan
  2. Police sources said pipe bomb was detonated at Port Authority
  3. Eye witnesses said, "There was a stampede up the stairs to get out"
An explosion rocked New York's Port Authority Bus Terminal, one of the city's busiest commuter hubs, on Monday morning and police said one suspect was injured and in custody, with three other injuries reported. Mayor Bill de Blasio said the blast was an 'attempted terrorist attack.' New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said the device that exploded in the subway was 'low-tech'

Police were not yet identifying the device used. Local television channel WABC cited police sources as saying a possible pipe bomb detonated in a passageway below ground and WPIX cited sources as saying a man with a "possible second device" has been detained in the subway tunnel.

The fire department tweeted there were four injuries, all non-life threatening. One of the injured was a Port Authority police officer.

The bus terminal was temporarily closed, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said in a Twitter statement.

A large swathe of midtown Manhattan was closed to traffic, between 45th Street to 40th Street and 7th Avenue to 9th Avenue, police said. Subway trains were bypassing the Times Square station, the city's busiest.

"There was a stampede up the stairs to get out," said Diego Fernandez, one of the commuters at Port Authority. "Everybody was scared and running and shouting."

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and President Donald Trump have been briefed on the incident. New York governor Andrew Cuomo was on the scene.

WABC reported the suspect was in his 20s and was from Bangladesh, and that he has been in the United States for seven years and has an address in New York's Brooklyn.

First reports of the incident began soon after 7 a.m. (1200 GMT), at the start of the city's rush hour. New York in December sees a surge of visitors who come to see elaborate store displays, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and Broadway shows.

News of the incident jarred financial markets as trading was getting underway for the week. Standard & Poor's 500 index emini futures pared gains, the dollar weakened against the yen and U.S. Treasury securities prices gained on a modest flight-to-safety bid.

The incident occurred less than two months after an Uzbek immigrant killed eight people by speeding a rental truck down a New York City bike path, in an attack for which Islamic State claimed responsibility.

In September 2016, a man injured more than two dozen people when he set off a homemade bomb in New York's Chelsea district.

South Korea holds live fire drills

South Korea holds live-fire drills that simulate destroying North Korea's leadership "The reason they want it, I think, is they want to be able to either respond to North Korean provocation or they want North Korea to be aware that they have the capability to respond if North Korea goes too far," said Schuster, now a Hawaii Pacific University professor. "To an extent it's as much a political as an operational development that's important to South Korean self-confidence." Moon has sought to be "more accommodating" to North Korea than his predecessor and looked for nonmilitary ways to resolve the situation, Schuster said, but the North's recent actions have undermined public confidence in his policies. They have also alarmed South Korea's allies in the region and around the world. The United States responded this week to a series of missiles launches by North Korea -- one of them over Japan -- by staging a mock...

Spanish Pork Skewers for a healthy country

Cooking Spanish Pork Skewers Skunty empire  For casual entertaining, the tapas experience translates well to the small home kitchen. One delicious hot tapas classic easily made at home is called pinchos Morunos, or Moorish skewers, essentially small kebabs of pork marinated in Arabic (Moorish) spices and grilled, usually on a hot steel plancha. Because most Muslim Arabs wouldn’t eat pork, one presumes the original dish was lamb. It’s anyone’s guess how it evolved into this ubiquitous tapa selection in Christian Spain. Nevertheless, now it means pork seasoned with garlic, cumin, coriander, pimentón and sometimes oregano. Once skewered, they need only about 5 minutes on a hot griddle Recipe to cook pork skewers 1 ½   pounds pork tenderloin, in half-inch slices   Salt   pepper 2   teaspoons cumin seeds, lightly toasted and ground 2   teaspoons coriander seeds, lightly toasted and ground ½   teaspoon pimentón, sweet or hot ½   teaspoon dried oregano 2...
