US retail giant Sears has filed for bankruptcy after succumbing to huge debts and losses.
The company, which is more than 100 years old, was once America's largest retailer but has been battered by fierce competition and the rise of internet shopping.
Sears, which still has 886 stores across the US, was left fighting for its life ahead of a key $134m (£102m) debt repayment due at the start of this week.
Court papers showed it had now filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a process that allows indebted companies to restructure its debts.
Sears began life as a mail order catalogue in the 1880s - a pioneering business that has been described as the Amazon of its day.
It came to dominate US malls and at its peak sales were equivalent to 1% of US gross national product. It was overtaken as America's largest retailer by Walmart in 1989.
Sears - which took over smaller rival Kmart in 2004 - joins a growing list of retailers that have filed for bankruptcy or liquidated in the last few years, with Toys R Us among the highest profile.
It now faces the question of whether it can continue as a much smaller concern or will be forced out of business altogether.
Craig Johnson, president of retail consultancy Customer Growth Partnership, said: "This is a company that stood like a colossus over the American retail landscape.

"Hopefully a smaller new Sears will be healthier."
The bankruptcy, which comes ahead of the crucial holiday shopping season, will have an impact on tens of thousands of workers as well as store landlords.
Sears still employed 90,000 people this year though this was down from a peak of 350,000.
The company has racked up $6.26bn in losses - excluding one off items - since its last annual profit in 2010, according to analysis from Ken Perkins of research firm Retail Metrics.
Sales of $16.7bn in its last fiscal year are down from $50bn in 2008.
The number of stores has fallen to fewer than 900, down from 4,000 in 2012.
Its stock market valuation, $11bn at the time of the merger with Kmart, has shrivelled to just $37m.
Chief executive and largest shareholder Eddie Lampert has reportedly been trying to arrange a deal that, while in bankruptcy protection, see Sears close hundreds of its stores but at least stay in business.

How to prepare Seared Steak

Reverse-Seared Steak Time 45 to 55 minutes, plus lighting the grill Reverse-searing is a grilling technique for steak that ensures a dark, sizzling crust and a rosy center that is perfectly cooked to your desired degree of doneness. This brilliant grilling method combines the low and slow cooking of traditional barbecue with the high heat charring practiced at steakhouses. Though it works well with any thick steak, from picanha to porterhouse, this recipe calls for a cut of steak popularized in Santa Maria, Calif., and is today known and loved across the U.S. as tri-tip. As the name suggests, it’s a triangular or boomerang-shaped steak cut from the tip of the sirloin, blessed with a robust beefy flavor. INGREDIENTS Yield : 4 servings * 1large or 2 small wood chunks (such as oak, hickory or mesquite) or 1½ cups wood chips * Canola oil, for greasing the grill grate * 1tri-tip steak (about 2 to 2¼ pounds; see Tip) * Coarse kosher or sea salt * Freshly ground black pep...

Bannon to address Front National as French far-right leaders seek unity Beset by political and personal rifts, and with her popularity in the post-election doldrums, Le Pen is facing opposition to her plan to rename the party in an attempt to improve its electoral chances. presidential election. Hours before the conference opened it was revealed Donald Trump’s former adviser  Steve Bannon  would be speaking on the first day of the event. The move is seen by the traditional wing of the FN, founded by Le Pen’s father in the 1970s, as a betrayal of the party’s heritage. The new name will be voted on after it is unveiled on Sunday. The surprise guest speaker Bannon was announced on Twitter by the FN deputy president Louis Aliot. He wrote: “Welcome to Steve Bannon who will address the FN tomorrow at our congress and will meet ML [Le Pen]. The people are waking up and taking their destiny in hand.” Shortly afterwards Aliot tweeted a photograph of him sha...

Smash Burgers secret Recipes

Smash Burgers TIME :20 minutes  This is the typical griddled hamburger found in restaurants and fast food joints. Its edges have been grilled to a crispness. Instead of using a grill, it is better to cook in a large, cast-iron pan that has been greased with fat or oil. For beef, you can either grind your own or ask a butcher for coarse-ground chuck steak that has at least 20% fat content. Use an ice-cream scoop or spoon to handle it instead of your fingers, and store it in the refrigerator until you're ready to cook. A few ounces should be dropped into the pan, mashed with a spatula, salt it, and then turned over when it has become crisp. Then toast your bun and add cheese. The procedure proceeds swiftly. INGREDIENTS Yield: 4 to 8 servings ½teaspoon neutral oil, like canola, or a pat of unsalted butter 2pounds ground chuck, at least 20 percent fat Kosher salt and black pepper to taste 8slices cheese (optional) 8soft hamburger buns, lightly toasted Lettuce leaves, sliced toma...
