Packed Lunches Not a Right in Italian Schools, Court Rules

Some parents in Turin argue school lunches are unhealthy and expensive
Parents have reacted angrily to a decision by Italy's top court which states that the right to eat packed lunches in schools is not "unconditional."
Italy's Supreme Court said schools should have the autonomy to decide if children are allowed to eat packed lunches on school grounds.
A lower court previously ruled in favour of a group of Turin parents who wanted to opt out of school meals.
Parents say school meals are costly.
They also argue that food provided by schools can be unhealthy.
The Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that bringing a packed lunch was "a possible violation of the principles of equality and non-discrimination based on economic circumstances".
The judges said schools were places where individual differences should be taken into account "alongside the interests of the school community".

How did parents react?

The ruling sparked outrage amongst parents, with one mother describing it as "an act of violence." ".
Lorenza, who has two children at a Turin school, told a local TV stationshe spent more than €2,000 (£1,823) on school meals, more than her monthly salary.
"My older daughter was not happy because the quality of the food didn't justify the cost, and also because of the hygiene issues with the canteen.
"She would often complain that the cutlery was dirty, that the glasses were not particularly clean, or that there would be hairs on the plates", she said.
A local Turin Facebook group called on parents to petition schools, arguing that sending in home-cooked food was a "social right" which did not hamper their children's ability to participate in school life.
Others said they could not be sure canteens would cater to specific dietary requirements of some pupils.
Other European countries, such as Finland, provide free school lunches to all pupils. In France, school lunches are not free, but are heavily subsidised. All infant pupils in England's schools are entitled to a free hot meal at lunchtime, but take-up is not compulsory.

How to cook Mushroom Soup

Mushroom Soup Yield : 4 servings Time: 30 minutes If the word “mushroom” conjures for you white buttons in little supermarket tubs, you’re not alone. But there is a big world of mushrooms out there, and you don’t have to be a forager to live in it. Wild mushrooms can be found in spring, summer and fall, but farmed mushrooms, grown mostly in the dark, are always around and a little easier to find than the ones hiding in the woods. So are dried mushrooms, which may be domesticated or truly wild and which are among the most flavorful ingredients you can keep in your pantry. This lovely soup is made with a combination of dried and fresh. It's delightfully simple – it comes together in about a half hour – which allows the complex flavors of the mushrooms to really shine through. INGREDIENTS   2 to 3   ounces dried mushrooms (like cremini, morel; whatever you like) ½   stick butter 1   sprig fresh thyme or rosemary 1   large yellow onion or 3 or 4 shallots, chopped 1 ...

Wondering something to Eat "Bacon Explosion"

How to cook Bacon Explosion This concoction and Internet sensation came to The Times from Jason Day and Aaron Chronister, who created it shortly before Christmas one year in Roeland Park, Kan. They modestly call it “the BBQ Sausage Recipe of all Recipes.” It contains at least 5,000 calories and 500 grams of fat, but you don’t have to eat it all at once. It is not for vegetarians, ascetics or the faint of heart — instead, consider it a delicious challenge to your abilities at the grill. RECIPES FOR BACON 2   pounds thick-cut sliced bacon 1 ½   pounds Italian sausage, casings removed 3   tablespoons barbecue rub ¾   cup barbecue sauce HOW TO COOK BACON  STEP 1 Using 10 slices of bacon, weave a square lattice like that on top of a pie: first, place 5 bacon slices side by side on a large sheet of aluminum foil, parallel to one another, sides touching. Place another strip of bacon on one end, perpendicular to the other strips. Fold first, third and fifth bacon strips...
