Trump snubs EU with diplomatic downgrade

Trump administration snubs EU with diplomatic downgrade Washington (CNN) Ambassadors lining up to pay their respects at President George H.W. Bush's funeral knew the routine: They would be called in order of seniority, a well-established system in which everyone knew where they belonged. Until they didn't. The European Union's ambassador to the US, David O'Sullivan, normally among the first 30 foreign envoys to be seated, watched as almost every other ambassador to the US took a seat, leaving him among the last to be called. That, according to an EU official, was how the 28-member bloc learned that the Trump administration had downgraded its diplomatic status from a state to an international organization. The shift -- a reversal of an Obama administration decision in 2016 -- has riled Brussels, deepening a growing rift and appalling diplomats in Washington who decried the move as "amateur" and "unprofessional." Trump says he won’t sign Senate deal to avert shutdown, demands funds for border security

Trump says he won’t sign Senate deal to avert shutdown, demands funds for border security        President Trump threatened Thursday to veto a stopgap spending bill unless it includes billions of dollars to build a wall along the border with Mexico, sending large parts of the federal government lurching toward a shutdown starting Saturday. His comments came after an emergency meeting with House Republican leaders, where Trump revealed he would reject a measure passed in the Senate the night before. That measure would fund many government agencies through Feb. 8, but it would not include any new money for Trump’s border wall. “I’ve made my position very clear. Any measure that funds the government must include border security,” Trump said in an event at the White House. He added, “Walls work, whether we like it or not. They work better than anything.”

The proposals are designed to limit disruption in certain key areas, such as finance and transport, if Brexit goes ahead in March without a deal. As PM Theresa May's proposed exit plan flounders, both sides are preparing for the worst-case scenario. The UK has allocated £2bn ($2.5bn) in funding to government departments. What are the European plans? The European Commission will set out 14 bare-bones proposals, covering legislation that will aim to ensure some continuity. The measures address eight sectors, taking in issues such as road transport and customs, and how flights can proceed between the UK and EU. These areas also include data protec...

The company, which is more than 100 years old, was once America's largest retailer but has been battered by fierce competition and the rise of internet shopping. Sears, which still has 886 stores across the US, was left fighting for its life ahead of a key $134m (£102m) debt repayment due at the start of this week. Court papers showed it had now filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a process that allows indebted companies to restructure its debts. Sears began life as a mail order catalogue in the 1880s - a pioneering business that has been described as the Amazon of its day.
